Image/video upload error

Look We get it - you got a sweet gif and you wanna show it to all your users when they onboard into your app. Let's make that dream a reality, friend.

we got this gif

Maximum total number of pixels in all frames/pages is 50 megapixels

So you go to upload your Leonardo Dicaprio congratulations gif in your product tour, and get hit with this error, so you end up on this page of the Hopscotch help docs. Bummer.

megapixel limit error

Unfortunately this 50 megapixel limitation is from our underlying image storage service, but there are ways we can get past it.

What does it mean?

The pixel count is simply the total pixel count for each “frame” of the gif multiplied by the number of frames.

Let's take an example of a gif that is 1280px x 720px in dimensions.

This gif is 1280x720px, or 921600px, per frame. One megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels, so this gif ends up being about 1mp per frame.

If there are 150 frames, that is roughly ~150mp.

What should you do?

There are a couple ways to bypass the problem (which may be used in combination to reach the megapixel limit):

  • Export the gifs in smaller dimensions. For reference, the Hopscotch “Card” itself is roughly 520px wide.
  • Lower the frame rate when exporting. This will be slightly less “smooth", but can win you back some megapixel headroom by reducing the total number of frames via a reduced frame rate.

If you exported your gifs using ScreenFlow, you can read about customizing your dimensions and frame rate here.
